NEWS:Saigon Is Released From Atlantic Records

Photobucket

While in London, Brooklyn emcee Saigonannounced Thursday to SoulCultureTV that he's been released from Atlantic Records. "I just got my release from Atlantic yesterday. Literally, a good release, a fair release," he stated.

He went on to say
, “Moving forward, I’m not gonna position myself to where I’m just somebody’s artist and they can have me just sitting around not able to put out music," headded, "I’m gonna play the game by my rules. When I was talking about quitting it was more so saying that 'I’m quitting playing it their way', I’m doing it my way from now on.”

Saigon, who has had problems with the label for years,
publicly announced his discontent towards Atlantic in 2007 via MySpace, "Atlantic doesnt seem to have the desire to release [The Greatest Story Never Told]. I just think the once great Atlantic Records has been belittled down to a home of ringtone making artists, like they sign the great jingle writers and real artist like myself dont get a chance to showcase my musical abilities."

In 2008, an announcement made on Just Blaze's blog confirmed that the album had been released from Atlantic as well as complete ownership to Saigon.

The Greatest Story Never Told was never released but is slated to drop sometime this year on Amalgam Digital and Just Blaze's record label, Fort Knocks Entertainment.

NEWS:Lee Scratch Perry - 'Mad Alien Dub'

Photobucket

Some call him a genius, others claim he's certifiably insane, a madman, but one thing cannot e disputed and that is Lee Perry is a towering figure in reggae - a producer, mixer, and songwriter who, along with King Tubby, helped shape the sound of dub and made reggae music such a powerful part of the pop music world. In terms of musical quality, you couldn't do much better than this collection. It's just about as good an encapsulation of the art of super-producer Lee "Scratch" Perry and his studio band, the Upsetters, as you'll find. Originally issued in the mid-seventies on the Creole label, this album finds Perry at the peak of his powers, taking classic songs as Ricky & Bunny's "Bush Weed Corn Trash" and subjecting them to the deconstructionist rigors of dub - the sound careening wwildly between the left and right channels, bass and drums dropping out suddenloy, leaving only guitar snippets of sung vocals, while Perry adds his own apocalyptic imprecations and off-the-wall witticisms on top. What makes these tracks so powerful is the juxtaposition of Perry's insane production approach with the Upsetters' utterly rock-solid grooves.

NEWSU-N-I & Ro Blvd. feat. Bun B, Evidence (of Dilated Peoples), Fashawn, Kes Kaos, Miguel - 'A Love Supreme 2.0 (CD + DVD) OUT NOW!!

Photobucket

In late 2006, the Hip Hop duo U-N-I and producer Ro Blvd began working on a project entitled A Love Supreme. The resulting project, though circulated outside of 'normal' industry channels and never on CD, has catapulted U-N-I into the position of being one of the country's fastest rising musical acts and leaders of the LA new school of Hip Hop. Now U-N-I (comprised of Y-O and Thurzday) release a deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed instant classic entitled A Love Supreme 2.0. The reworking of the entire project features five brand new tracks including the "Land Of The Kings" remix with Bun B. To sweeten the package, A Love Supreme 2.0 comes with a full length DVD (details below). U-N-I has created such a buzz that they have been signed to Los Angeles mega agency ICM who are booking the group into a 30 city US tour in the spring of 2010 with major festival appearances coming for the summer season.

The DVD (Region Free; Run Time: 89 Minutes) entitled A Love Supreme: U-N-I & Ro Blvd. - The Documentary tells the story of how these three young men created a project that reached hundreds of thousands of people without a major label record deal. The DVD includes six music videos, in addition to live performances at Bumbershoot and The Key Club.

NEWS:Xzibit - "MMX" New Album Comin Soon!!!

Photobucket

Xzibit, who too many people likely know only thanks to Pimp My Ride, was a formidable MC in his hey-day. But over the years the quality and quantity of his music has declined, likely because of his constant TV and film commitments. He's had some minor hits here and there, but nothing to match the popularity he achieved in the early 2000s. In several interviews, X said he was merely unfocused as the years went on, especially when recording his previous record, Full Circle. For his seventh record, though, the MC put in the time and effort to craft what he said is a quality product. So far it's been confirmed that he's joined on MMX by rappers Kurupt and 40 Glocc and producer Scoop DeVille.

ΝΕWS:B-Real, Xzibit Form New Group, Called Serial Killaz, With Rising Rapper Young De

Last month, a new track called "Body Bags," featuring Cypress Hill frontman B-Real, Xzibit and rising rapper Young De hit the web. The collaboration wasn't just for one of the MCs' project, it is part of a group effort between the trio called the Serial Killaz.

We caught up with Young De on the set of Xzibit's new music video, "Hurt Locker," recently where he revealed the group's formation.

He said the three joined forces after a chance meeting in the studio, where they began creating new music and couldn't deny their chemistry.

"The way that it actually came together was I had met Xzibit in the studio. I walked into the studio and there's Xzibit, and I got introduced to him," Young De explained to BallerStatus.com. "He's like 'Hey, you're Young De, who's on B-Real's 'Don't Ya Dare Laugh,' ' (the first single off B-Real solo debut,Smoke N Mirrors). He's like 'I love that song. I need to get your on something.' So, we started working from there, and we just really clicked up ... mentally, like on the same page, work ethic-wise.

"And, I've been working with B-Real the last two years. That's the person who's showed me a lot about this game so far. So, we started by [Xzibit] hopping on one of the songs, because me and B-Real were working on an album together. It came from that," he added.

The Serial Killaz album is nearly complete, says De. However, you won't be hearing too much from it just yet. Because members Xzibit and B-Real have their own projects in the works -- X's next solo album,MMX, set to drop sometime this year; and B-Real is gearing up for a new Cypress Hill album, set for April.

Further details, including the project's title, guests, producers, etc. are unknown at press time.

Young De did say to expect a "themed album" though, before declining to give more details. He did express is excitement though, saying once the two hip-hop vets came to him with the idea, he jumped at the opportunity.

"Number one, I feel very blessed to be even ... when B-Real and Xzibit come to you and go 'Hey we're gonna do a group together' ... you go like 'Hell ya! (laughs) Where do you want me to stand?'" the rapper said. "It was like an organic thing."

Until more Serial Killaz music leaks, you can expect to hear more songs and music videos from X's upcoming MMX album. Xzibit told us that he'll be leaking both visuals and tracks leading up to the album's release, which hadn't been announced at press time.

Cypress Hill, on the other hand, are set to drop their first new group album since 2004's Till Death Do Us Part. Their new album, titled Rise Up, is set for release April 20 (4/20), of course. You can download their first single, "It Ain't Nothin'," at their official website CypressHill.com

NEW LP-Bisco Smith - The Broadcast

Photobucket

Bisco Smith a/k/a Bisc1 is a Boston native with Brooklyn residency, who did art direction for Def Jux, Ninja Tune and Eastern Conference Records. With his sophomore full-length album, The Broadcast, Bisco’s eclectic, introspective and complex lyrics interact and diversify with the eclectic production of J. Vegus. As was the case with 2007's When Electric Night Falls, Bisco is an acquired taste. This is music that moves the mind to a point where the body may follow. The Broadcast transmits without static, and whether or not you adjust your dial, you can hear the quality in the music.

The album's first single is, “Morning Breath.” The beat wakes you up with its slow deliberate funk. It’s a spacey track with digital effects, synthesizers and that constant element of organized noise. The first verse displays a vocal dexterity with a flow that is melodic to listen to. Bisco Smith’s metaphors and seemingly detached lyrics are like fine art, as each line seems designed to be appreciated individually as opposed to a collaborative statement. If you aren’t in the mood to listen clearly and decipher what’s being said, then the aesthetic of Bisc 1’s lyrics can easily get lost, because their abstract intertwining seems to be birthed only for the extreme intellectual. You can tell that he loves words, Hip Hop and its history. In the second verse he intends to help preserve the culture as he lyrically magnifies the names of some who came before him. DMC, Guru, Cypress Hill are just a few who will live forever and flourish from what they did in the past and have inspired others to continue to do in the future. The statement is, it’s a new day, but the raw power yesteryear's culture continues.

“Railroads” carries a Rock sound, as the head-banging vibe in the production draws you in immediately from its guitar flavored first bar. The normally laid back Bisco has more pep in his lyrical step. He’s not over the top by any means, but he is amped appropriately for the equally intensified production. It’s trains, tracks, locomotives and railroads used metaphorically throughout the song - all wordplay about a graf writer-turned-emcee opening doors, laying down tracks, elevating his skills and conducting passengers to all get aboard.

Bisco’s flow and command thrives and flourishes on the track, “Time Zones.” It’s a perfect melding as this song features Human League-flavored vocals on top of a Hip Hop beat as the hook. “All day is when we try to get by / All day is when we try to survive." It’s all about not getting lost in time and not letting time pass you by. This song as a whole is presented by a pensive emcee backed with scratching, cutting, hard snares and an invigorating beat. You can actually feel this song bounding triumphantly as it leaps out at you.

On the opposite end of that spectrum is, “Vibrations.” The Dub-tinged track does posesses a certain amount of creativity and flavor, but Bisco’s more than laid back, non-loud vocals on top of J. Vegus’ skilled, but non-layered production is devoid of enthusiastic energy. Had Bisco’s delivery been more exuberant and the production boomed and pounded with intensity out of my speakers, “Vibrations” could’ve been flawless.

My favorite offering is, “Transmission Live.” It’s a slow and sexy offering accompanied by hand claps and a sample that sounds like a female moan or a continuous sung note. With this song, Bisco’s flow is oozing confidence. “Fresh Water” on the production tip is a ghoulish horror movie married to a Punk / New Wave vibe. Top that off with an extremely unorthodox delivery, hook and topic. The end result is a fresh water flow safe for you to drink.

Bisco is dyslexic with his lyrics and J. Vegus is dyslexic with his music. Together, they tickle your mind and ear and make you listen closely. Tune in, turn it up and enjoy the broadcast of a true eclectic feeling brought to you by a Bisco and J.vegus collaboration.

BEEF NEWS:Shots Fired In Fight Between Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy Crews

An altercation between members of Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy's posses yesterday (March 4) resulted in gunfire, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The fight reportedly began around 4:00 PM at Walter's Clothing in Atlanta, GA, and closed the store down for about 30 minutes.

"There was a physical altercation inside the location between several men," explained Atlanta Police spokesman James Polite. One of the men produced a weapon "and as a result a private armed security guard of a local entertainer discharged his weapon."

Apparently, the security guard, who was employed by rapper Waka Flocka, has been detained.

"They just started going at it," said Patrick Morrison, a Walter's employee who witnessed the fight.

Currently, Gucci Mane is serving time in Fulton County jail for a probation violation, and is due to be released in May.

NEWS:DJ Premier & Joell Ortiz Speak On "Project Boy"

Photobucket

Photobucket

Almost any time DJ Premier is involved, the track seemingly jumps to one of the most anticipated and appreciated. Such has been the case with "
Project Boy " by Joell Ortiz, a cut that was produced by DJ Premier. But, Ortiz's involvement is also a treat for his fans, as Premo understands.

"Joell's a beast. He's definitely one of the illest New York lyricists, period, of this era," Premo noted. While the respect is mutual, Ortiz understood Premier's schedule can be hectic.

"Preme is a real busy dude," he said. But, regardless of that fact, Ortiz and Premo linked up.

The result of this is "Project Boy," a track that DJ Premier says is "a little left."

"With Joell, I knew I could go a little left and he would understand it without going, 'Nah, I need something for the club. I need a radio record.' I knew he would understand it...That's why I went in with that type of mentality. I really wanted to take it back to just chopping up a break."

Once Ortiz laid his vocals, which he had pre written on his Blackberry, Premier was impressed. "I'm definitely feeling what he said."

The Slaughterhouse emcee
felt the same, adding that it could be his favorite record.

"That's one of my favorite records that I've ever done. To be honest with you, that's one of my favorite records. It's called 'Project Boy' but you ain't gotta be from the projects, you just gotta know what it is to struggle and you'll feel that record."

READ BELOW MESSAGE FROM TOKI WRIGHT:

Friends and Family,

First off thank you for your continued support. Since the release of my debut full length album “A Different Mirror” in June I’ve been continuing to work hard to bring you more. In the last six months I’ve traveled tour the country, released new videos, and been working daily to provide you with more original work.

“BlackMale” is an 8 song digital EP of all brand new music. Seeing that it is Black History month it seemed like a fitting to release this interpretation of African-American manhood. I worked closely with Benzilla, Reggie Reg, Greg Greaze, PC, and Mike Swoop to craft this project. This project was also made possible by the Minnesota State Arts Board’s Cultural Community Partnership Grant. I set the foundation for this project with an organization called CRUNC (Community Roots Under New Construction).

“BlackMale” is available for free download, or as a “choose your own amount” donation. You can give whatever amount you see fit. My friend Jeanine Estime will be returning to her homeland of Haiti to hand out basic needs items (soap, toothpaste, asprin, etc) to people in her old neighborhood that were effected by the earthquake. All donations from the digital downloads will go directly to her via me.

I’m also proud to announce I will headlining my first tour titled the “Black Belt Tour” with Haziq Ali (Organized Rhyme/Atlanta), and Omaur Bliss. Stop by one of the tour dates below to hear new music from the EP and “A Different Mirror.”

NEWS:Freeway sits down with Baller Status to discuss "The Stimulus Package" & going independent

Photobucket

"The hip-hop world is always changing. New rappers come and go every single day. Surviving in this game takes talent, hard work and connections. Just ask Philly rapper Freeway.

Freeway came into the game at the height of Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella Records' success. State Property was a seven-man group from Philadelphia that gave Jay-Z the street credibility he needed and they took on all beefs without hesitation. Freeway said one of the best metaphors ever heard in a diss song against Jay-Z's former mentor Jaz-O: "You like the beer Cain dropped in 'Menace': 40 and Broke."

Freeway put out a few almost classic albums during his days at the label Jay-Z built, and then, followed with a few street albums. Today, he is back with one of the brightest up-and-coming producers in the game -- Jake One (50 Cent, G-unit, Mary J Blige) -- and a new machine behind him in indie powerhouse, Rhymesayers Entertainment.

In this recent sitdown with Freeway, the rapper spoke to us about his new effort alongside Jake One, titled The Stimulus Package, his new home at Rhymesayers, and how -- in all his years with the Roc -- he never saw Jay-Z with any goats or the devil."
