NEWS:DJ Doo Wop Remembers Guru The Father, Last Tour
For 15 years, Doo Wop worked alongside Guru as a tour deejay and collaborator. The mixtape legend appeared on Guru's Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures album, making a sequel to the Gang Starr classic "Step Into The Arena." In the wake of this morning's tragic announcement of Guru's death, HipHopDX approach Doo Wop to reflect on his friend and peer.
Doo Wop revealed that Guru was aware of his cancer as of last year, a diagnosis he kept private from the fans. "In mid-2009, Guru called me to discuss something about an upcoming Japan tour and to also tell me that he's gonna pass by my crib after a doctor's appontment he had scheduled due to some back pain he was having," remembered Doo Wop. "Next thing I know, he calls me and I could tell he was obviously in tears, then he says the doctor told him he has cancer."
The 95 Live maker continued, speaking on his relationship with the Boston-born emcee. "[Guru] wasn't just someone I recently met and worked with for a brief period. No, this was my friend of over 15 years, someone I toured over 33 countries with. Sometimes my phone would ring and my Caller ID said 'Guru cell,' I'll pick up and he'll say, 'Peace. Hold on,' then I'd hear him giving the phone to his son while saying, 'Here, it's uncle Doo Wop.'" The personal relationship extended to Guru's son, named K.C. "His son would tell me everything they did or were about to do that day. As busy as Guru was, he did what a great father is supposed to do and that was to make sure his son didn't grow up wondering why his dad doesn't make time for him."
While Guru's cancer diagnosis was kept private even in the wake of February's heart attack news, Doo Wop was able to reveal the Gang Starr emcee's reaction to the news. "The day he found out he had cancer, all he kept saying was how he gotta beat this because his little man needs him. I toured with Guru from 2005 [through] November, 2009. He wasn't feeling well on that last tour we did together, but pushed himself to stick it out."
Doo Wop also added that an incident prevented the longtime friends from speaking more recently. "During that tour, one of Guru's people's and I had an altercation that was long coming. That happened right in the middle of the tour, and the rest of the tour was so uncomfortable due to this issue." Doo Wop did not specify who he had the altercation with. "I told myself, 'This is my last tour, I'm done.' My mind was made up 100%. When we got back from that tour, we landed at JFK [Airport] and all rode back together." The bittersweet moment would prove to be significant to Doo Wop, especially today. "I was the first one to be dropped off. As I was exiting the car, I knew that the altercation which occurred would end up in me no longer being his tour deejay, but I had no idea that would be the last time I would ever see my friend."

NEWS:Free Los Nativos "White Papers" Digital EP
Although Los Na has been quiet recently, you better believe they are always working on something like music, art or organizing! While working on new music for their next release they came across 3 songs that fit the theme for April 20th (4:20). In true Los Nativos fashion these are not your typical “weed” songs. From concepts of using the “topic” of the day as a tool to make money and the moral struggle around it, to the desire of law enforcement to catch certain people or class of people with anything illegal, or it’s cultural and medicinal use to just smoking. What ever your thoughts on the day maybe you will enjoy the music. Maybe more if you smoke one first!
Los Nativos - White Papers
1. "Expired DL" produced by Xilam Balam
2. "The Bricks" feat. St. Paul Slim produced by Felipe Cuauhtli
3. "Let's Puff" produced by Medium Zach of Big Quarters

NEWS:Sage Francis “Best of Times”
This track is part spoken word and part hip-hop, so you’ll have to get a minute or so in for the actual rapping to begin. The Compton rapper fired shots back at Alchemist on Twitter with, "[Alchemist] you already know me ALAN, don't get ya teeth knocked out !!! then you can Snooze 4 real!"
The two worked together in 2004, on the song "Dead Bodies," which featured then-fellow G-Unit artist Prodigy on Alchemist's song "Dead Bodies." The record was released on Al's 1st Infantry album.
Earlier in the week rapper Jay Rock also took to Twitter after hearing the freestlye track. "I GET ON TWITTER N EVERYBODY HITTING ME SAYN [Game] GETTING @ ME IN HIS FREESTYLE. SAME AS CUBE, NIGGAS NEED TO HAVE BALLS TO SAY NAMES," he added, "IM NOT SCARED TO GO AGAINST NOBODY ALL NIGGA HAVE TO DO IS SAY MY NAME AND ITS ON WITH WHO EVER .I DONT FEEL I NEED TO APOLOGIZE TO NO1."
Game's "400 Bars" which went viral on the web Thursday, features the Grammy nominated artist going in on everything from the drama with G-Unit to the luxury of expensive cars. This summer Game is expected to drop his highly anticipated fourth studio album, The R.E.D. Album via Aftermath Entertainment/Interscope Records, slated for release June 15.
UPDATE: Yesterday afternoon, the Soul Assassins/Mobb Deep-affiliated producer tweeted, "For the record I don't have actual beef with @Ihategame. That's my brother! He was on my 1st album dummies remember."

NEWS:Cypress HIll Talks To Complex About Most Influential Records
With over 20 years in Rap's consciousness, Cypress Hill is still going strong, just releasing their eighth studio album Rise Up. In an extended interview with Complex Magazine this week, members B-Real and Sen Dog spoke on the inspiration for ten of their most influential records. They explained that little of their music was recorded in-studio, rather their songs were created in group member DJ Muggs' home.
"All of our shit started in Muggs’ bedroom man," said B-Real. "There was probably one song that was created outside of that environment once we got our record deal. Maybe it was “Hole In The Head” and “Latin Lingo.” Those were the two last songs that we recorded for that first album. And those were the only two that were created in a studio and not in Muggs’ bedroom. We were pretty much all together all the time. He’d either be saying, 'Hey you should fuck with this.' Or we’d hear something where we’d be like, 'Hey let’s fuck with that.' We always threw ideas at each other. Really, he was the one for the vision for the music and how he wanted those tracks to sound. We’d just pick the ones we liked."
Sen Dog explained that B-Real's motivation for writing the 1991 record "Pigs," stemmed from a tense run-in with their neighborhood police officers.
"[After the confrontation] B-Real was pretty pissed," explained Sen Dog. "When I rolled up to my house, he was sitting in front of my mom’s house in his car. I rolled up in my driveway and I walked up to him and I was like, 'Hey what are you doing?' And he goes, 'I’m writing a song about the pigs!' He had this look on his face. When I came back outside the house, he was like, 'Listen to this!' That was actually one of the later songs that we recorded during the first album because either Muggs or I reminded him about the poem he wrote about the pigs."
The group members also shared the inspiration for their video "How I Could Just Kill A Man," and explained how they teamed up with Ice Cube for the Friday soundtrack.

NEWS: Guru of Gangstarr Dies, Writes Letter To Supporters...RIP
Legendary Gangstarr artist Guru has succumbed to cancer after a lengthy bout with the disease.
The artist, born Keith Elam, died on Monday April 19. He was 43 years old.
Solar, Guru's partner, expressed sadness over the loss.
"The world has lost one of the best MCs and Hip-Hop icons of all-time -- my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru," Solar said in a statement. "Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius.
Guru, a Boston native, rose to fame in the 80's as one half of Gangstarr, the iconic rap group with DJ Premier.
The group released six highly regarded albums in their tenure until 2003 when they broke up. After his successful run with Premier, Guru founded 7 Grand Records with producer Solar.
Solar went on to tend to the rapper as he fell ill, seemingly controlling the flow of information and access to Guru. Many of his family members complained that they were denied their right to see him.
Solar also said that Guru wrote a letter to fans and sent it out through a press agency.
"For the fans that reached out with love and support, I can't tell you how much that meant to Guru and myself. Guru prepared this letter (read below) while he was in the hospital for the fans," the producer continued. "I hope now that Guru has moved on to a better place."
In the letter, seen below, the rapper explains his illness, expresses gratitude to supporters and offers some parting words for DJ Premiere.
I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options.
I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.
My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody's feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own.
I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life.

NEWS: Kings Go Forth - 'The Outsiders Are Back' LP OUT NOW!!
In 2009, Kings Go Forth burst onto the international soul/funk underground with a series of three self-released 45 rpm singles. (The first disc, "One Day" b/w "You're The One," was pressed in an edition of 500 copies that now command up to $200 a piece on various Internet auction sites.) Now signed to Luaka Bop, 'The Outsiders Are Back' was preceded by a 12inch single, "Don't Take My Shadow," containing multiple mixes and edits created by the legendary Tom Moulton, a pioneering remixer of the early disco era. Here at last is a band creating its own immediately identifiable sound from a broad palette of classic R&B (mid-Sixties Chicago, early-Seventies Philadelphia, and other sources far more obscure); setting that sound to Black Wolf's timeless lyrics of love and loss, despair and hope and delivering it all with fierce urgency and undeniable emotional commitment. There is power in Kings Go Forth's multi-ethnic makeup, in their 25year age span (from 30 to 55), and in their unforced command of the soul music idiom. And to date, the soul revival has not produced another band with a vocal blend so rich in tone and feeling.

NEWS:Various Artists (Now-Again Records & Jazzman Records Present) - 'California Funk: Rare Funk 45s From The Golden State LP OUT NOW!!
The Jazzman/Now-Again Funk series has offered surveys as broad as they are deep: Midwest Funk, Texas Funk, Florida Funk, Carolina Funk. Yet this might be the most important trawl of all: California Funk. Over a decade in the making, this, from compilers Malcolm Catto and Gerald "Jazzman" Short, is the Funk masterpiece. This anthology examines what happened to the independent ensembles who gigged during Sly and the Family Stone's Bay-area renaissance. It delves into the stories sidemen who worked alongside LA's Charles Wright and the Watt's 103rd Street Rhythm Bands and offers answers to elusive questions. At the same time, it offers thunderous drums, fuzzy wah-wah, fat basslines, blistering horns and exhortations akin to James Brown and his many disciples over its 21 track selection.
This official reissue was licensed by the lost bandleaders, bass players, drummers, label owners and studio-vets, independents, all, lost to history no more. Packaged as a "mini-LP" in a thick, "paste-on" gatefold cardboard sleeve Now-Again's issue of California Funk also comes with a 24-page full color booklet with full liner notes, annotation, and never-before-seen photos of these most impressive organizations.

NEWS:Immortal Technique Speaks on ‘Middle Passage’ Delay
Political emcee Immortal Technique is close to finishing his 4th album, The Middle Passage.
As an entrepreneurial artist that also serves as president of Viper Records, Technique explained that he has been very meticulous in his approach to the new LP, which he expects to be his biggest project to date.
“[We’re] 8 songs deep into the middle passage,” he told AllHipHop.com. “There was one sample that wasn’t clearable so we had to redo the song so it’s just been little stuff because we are trying to do it as official as possible.”
Because Immortal Technique is focused on the album having a streamlined focus, another project for additional songs is in early stages to accommodate fans.
“It’s a very, very vivid journey and then besides that, I will probably have a supplement to that as well,” he revealed. “Besides just the record, I got another 5-6 songs that are from a few years ago that didn’t really match the vibe of the album, but they’re still dope, so we might do an unreleased Immortal Technique EP.”
Viper Records is also still in the midst of a promotional run for Long Island rapper Diabolic’s Liar and a Thief LP, available at www.viperecords.com.
At press time, Immortal Technique has not finalized a release date for The Middle Passage.

NEWS:The Consulate General - 'Person Number' NEW LP OUT NOW!!
Person Number is the debut release by The Consulate General, a new project led by Alexander Chen of Boy in Static. Formed from a set of songs written and recorded after relocating to Gothenburg, Sweden, the album features a strong group of collaborators. A duet with Antoine Bedard (Montag), "What Time Is It Now," opens the album with detached yet emotional male harmonies. Multi-instrumentalists John Chao (of Misha) and Ryan Fritch (of Sole & The Skyrider Band) lend a hand on everything from marimba to double bass. Simon Scott (of Slowdive) joins near the end on "17th street," dressing 1940's crooner melodies with modern ambient electronics. It's an album full of similarly unlikely matches. "Liesa Lietzke" intersects doo-wop melodies with dissected IDM beats; "Half-Day Honeymoon" places light viola pizzicato over sub-heavy bass tones. From the single-ready chorus of the first track to the dreamy soundscape of the closer, Person Number is a richly layered debut album worth multiple listens.

NEWS:Inspectah Deck Prepping Instrumental Album
On the heels of dropping his fourth LP, Manifesto, Inspectah Deck is readying the release of his first instrumental album. XXLMag.com recently sat down with The Rebel INS to speak on his production work and his new, as-yet-untitled disc.
The Wu-Tang MC has been making beats for over 15 years, first learning how to piece tracks together from group mastermind Rza, and crew affiliates DJ Mathematics and True Master. “I been doing production since about the first album, but I wasn’t really serious with it, I was just more or less experimentin’, watchin’ Rza do what he does,” he said.
Deck eventually got placements on just about every Wu-Tang release from his fellow clansmen except the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, including songs for Ghostface’s Supreme Clientele, Method Man’s Tical and Rza’s Bobby Digital in Stereo, along with his own solo albums.
Now, ID is prepping a collection of new beats for aspiring rappers to test their skills on. “I’ll have something for you within two or three months,” he revealed. [Watch below]
The Manifesto, which features appearances by Raekwon, Cormega, Billy Danze of M.O.P., among others, is in stores now.

NEWS:Raekwon Speaks On Wu-Tang Clan "Love" & "Animosity"
"The Wu Massacre was something that Ghostface and Def Jam put together and asked for my assistance. I just came through for them...So Ghost quarterbacked the whole movement of thatWu Massacre album. But, it's really just to make sure that we let the fans know we're going to drop more music," he said of the collaborative project. "In my eyes, I wanted to do it independently but this is what Ghost wanted to do...so I supported it."
During the interview, he also added that the trio made an effort to make "Our Dreams, which they felt would be viable commercially. Alicia Keys also helped with the project, which Rae says she did out of love and kindness. Still, the Massacre didn't leave Method Man incredibly happy. As Rae explains, he and Meth were somewhat out of the equation and both felt the record should have gotten a better push from the label.
"This is something that me and Meth didn't really have too much knowledge about...Overall, he just thought that if we had a little bit more time to do a couple more new records, and really put a heavy promotional foot on it, we probably could have made this situation a little bit better. But, maybe Def Jam was just feeling like 'Cuban Linx is rockin' right now and we're just trying to follow that wave.'"
Whenever creative differences come up with the Wu, it's difficult to forget the tension that existed when the Wu released their last album together. Talk of the members not getting along grew and it seemed we would never get another disc from the clan. However, when asked if their next album was being held up by turmoil, Rae was frank in his response.
"No, it's not no beef in the crew. There's love in the crew. Even if there is animosity here and there, that's normal. That's life for you."
Still, Rae would not make a prediction about another Wu album.

NEWS:Brotha Lynch Hung - Dinner And A Movie ALBUM REVIEW
Silence of the Lambs is a gruesome Horror movie, but its an enduring film that plays often on the AMC network. Equally, Brotha Lynch Hung's interests separate him from most of his peers, but within his Horror-raps are intricate rhyme schemes and a lot of truth about his views on society. Strange Music succeeds in slowing down the rigorous rhyme writer enough to offer his most comprehensive album since Season of da Siccness, and true to both his catalog themes and production. Regardless of what one thinks about the slashings, the bondage, and the eating habits suggested within Dinner and a Movie's rhymes, the honesty and delivery that mixes with the Horror make this album both a brilliant comeback story, and a career milestone.
