Mos Def, De La Soul, Snoop To Appear On Gorillaz' Plastic Beach
The Gorillaz announced more details regarding their March 9 album Plastic Beach.

The cartoon group's third album, and first in five years, sees them working with some old friends in Rap icons De La Soul. Other notable Hip Hop guests include Mos Def and Snoop Dogg.

Also included is '60s and '70s R&B icon Bobby Wommack and onetime Velvet Underground front-man Lou Reed, among others. Plastic Beach's first single is the Mos Def-assisted "Stylo." The song will premier January 26.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Benjamin Laub better known as Grieves was exposed to music at a young age by his father who would take him to Jazz and Blues clubs. After moving to Fort Collins, Colorado, Grieves began to explore the sounds of Punk Rock and Hip Hop. Completely immersed in the artform, Grieves truly began honing his craft when he moved to Seattle at 19. After self-releasing his debut album Irreversible in 2007, Grieves took that momentum out on the road developing an ever growing fan base from the west coast to the east coast.

While in Seattle, Grieves would eventually hook up with a talented producer and multi-instrumentalist by the name of Budo. In 2008 the duo would hook up and create 15 tracks of sample-free, melody-driven, analog warmth titled 88 Keys & Counting. A combination of singing and rapping tethered together by guitar, horn, and keyboard driven instrumentals. Although ultimately an intense album, there are a few breaks with songs like "Identity Cards" (featuring Luckyiam of Living Legends fame) and "Greedy Bitch", a catchy break up song that will be stuck in your head for days after hearing it. Mainly a digital release, 88 Keys & Counting was welcomed with rave reviews of this new refreshing talent.

Now residing in New York City, Grieves and Budo are hard at work finishing his 2010 Rhymesayers debut. So while the world has to wait a little longer for this masterpiece, Rhymesayers is proud to present, 88 Keys & Counting, an introduction to a dynamic artist that everyone will be talking about soon enough.

Nuclear Winter, sole's first mixtape in a projected series, is both a return to his Ice Cube roots and an exploration of the mixtape as a form of folkloric practice. Not only does he cold jack beats from the likes of Kanye, Biggie and Rick Ross, he extends traditional mixtape appropriation by reworking each song's original theme into a broader critique. Though sole has long made songs from the raw material of recession, the war in Afghanistan, racist immigration law, and the industries of hype, Nuclear Winter smuggles them into the club.

It is a rap edition of the Broadside records of the '60's and '70's that sought to work as a kind of singing newspaper, reporting on the moment with a radical accent; the Situationists called this détournement, "the diversion of already existing cultural elements to new subversive purposes." When Woody Guthrie heard the Carter Family's hit hymn to Christian disconnection with this world, "Can't Feel at Home," at a dust bowl refugee camp in California, he ripped out of the song its exhausted pieties, and with what was left crafted, "Ain't Got No Home," a hard truth ode to the dispossessed.

On the record's first single, "My President," sole & Jared Paul of Prayers for Atheists (Strange Famous Records) demand the progressive president they wanted to imagine they were voting for. On "Everyday I'm Hustlin'," sole notes that "even the brokest among us are hard workers," and asks, "what the fuck is a hustler?" "Swagga Like Us," with Ceschi Ramos, Astronautalis, & Bleubird becomes a posse cut about the creep of gentrification.

Last year's Kanye hit "Heartless" becomes a diss aimed at Edward Bernays–Freud's nephew–and the cynical inventors of P.R. And Soulja Boy's "Turn My Swag On" becomes "Where They Put My Flag On?", in which sole details with intimacy the long night of American imperialism. This is pissing in the wind at its finest.

With Nuclear Winter, sole pulls the world into pop songs that mostly suceeded in canceling it out by way of self-contained swagger. They have here become pop songs begging to be blacklisted.

Big Jullien & His All Star - 'Riviera Sound No. 1 (Re-Issue) OUT NOW!!

Late 60s big band funk cuts galore! This LP gem is high in demand and fetches ridiculous prices at auctions. Two true masters of French jazz - Michel Colombier and Ivan Jullien - teamed up in 1970 with other well known musicians from the French scene to record this excellent album at the famous Barclay Studios in Paris. The music was composed and played by Colombier and Jullien together with an allstar ensemble of finest studio players. Famous drummer André Arpino can be heard aswell as hammond master Eddy Louiss, Maurice Vander on piano, Raymond Gimenez on electric guitar or Roger Guérin on trumpet. "Riviera Sound No.1" stands out as one of the perfect moments in French jazz funk, never reissued before and remaining on top of collector's lists since years. There are not many facts to be found about this vinyl artefact, although nearly everybody of the featured musicians earned himself an excellent worldwide reputation.

The ten piece horn section delivers a great funky big band style from start to finish, very groovy and always with this special mediterranean Riviera vibe. Wicked jazz funk is mixed with soundtrack or drama library sounds, like "Opening", that was also released on an impossible to find 45 single in the same year. "Crescendo" tears up every dancefloor, while "Talk" provides a monster open drum break at the beginning. Softer titles like "Edith" or "The Looser" draw their inspiration from cool jazz, modern jazz or pop music of the time. "I Remember Otis" is a soul and funk infused tribute to Otis Redding in a delicate Majestics or Mohawks style and the perfect groover "Wake The Monster" was re-recorded by Ivan Jullien later on for the always in demand Italian mod beat band "I Pyranas".

Ivan Jullien studied architecture and worked as a memorial inspector before he was sent to the Indochina war between 1952 and 1954. Back in Paris, trumpet playing became his main profession within the Paris jazz and variety scene of the time. He was soon playing in famous orchestras, e.g. Jacques Hélian or Claude Bolling, before accompanying big names like Johnny Griffin, Lester Young, Benny Bailey, Bud Powell, Dexter Gordon or Maynard Ferguson in the orchestra of the famous Olympia. In 1964 he was playing, arranging and recording for the likes of Johnny Hallyday, Francoise Hardy, Sacha Distel, Claude Nougaro, Charles Aznavour or Charles Trenet. All in all he did write thousands of arrangements for countless well known names from France and also started to compose and arrange big soundtracks like Claude Lelouche's "Un homme et une femme".

"Big Jullien" also started to lecture music analysis and music arrangement in 1983 and organized several big bands between 1965 and 1983. In 1993 he arranged "Carmen Jazz" featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater for the Vienna Festival, followed by special jazz arrangements of French chansons for Michel Leeb, finally performed by the Count Basie Orchestra in 2001. He received the "Prix Django Reinhardt" in 1971 and was also awarded with the "Prix Boris Vian" for his jazz adaption of "Porgy & Bess" together with Eddy Louiss. In 2003 he also received a "Victoires de la Musique" for his lifetime work. Moreover the man is "Chevalier

While most folks I know would shudder at the prospect of having to ride out with a Public Defender in any way shape or form, along comes a new Hip-Hop collective that just might be able to change the ongoing "low pay and minimal resources" stigma that the title usually evokes.

Based out of the middle ground between the bay and L.A. AKA the California city San Luis Obispo, the Public Defendaz diverse quintuplet is made up of Royal, Taktical, J4RD, Oktapus and IyayI, all of whom hold down the rhyming duties on "Tampered Evidence"; their debut project from back in 2008.

A.O.T.P. - THE UNHOLY TERROR.OUT ON MARCH 30th

DJ Food Stamp - 'Welfare Radio Vol. 35'

A few weeks back on February 10th Welfare Radio, like many others, paid homage to J. Dilla with a set in honor of the late great. I know, I'm such a conformist, but who could really resist? Anyway, what I thought was more important was celebrating the fact that Ma Dukes and fam got some control over Dilla's estate, name, and hopefully publishing rights and all that. My whig literally split last year when I read that article in Vibe exposing the typical industry and judico-politricks by the former executors of the estate. Hopefully this will give Jdilla.org some push. So bump this show, light it up, and show some love. I'm sure this show is probably all the same stuff from all the Dilla shows I had done before, but this time it's all wax. Anyway, on a complete side note, Nate Robinson on the Celtics anybody? I just want someone who can block Shaq.

Babu (of Dilated Peoples) - 'The Beat Tape Vol. 2'

A world-famous DJ with active memberships in Dilated Peoples and Beat Junkies among his most notable accomplishments, DJ Babu has made a noteworthy evolution. The Los Angeles-based turntablist also stands as one of underground rap's fastest-rising producers.

In 2007, DJ Babu released The Beat Tape Vol. 1, an instrumental compilation of the beatsmith's soulful yet hard hitting compositions. It's also been 1-year since Babu released the critically acclaimed Duck Season Vol. 3. A self produced album that boasted tracks from MCs all across the globe. At the beginning of 2010, the Dilated Junkie comes forth with the instrumental follow up, The Beat Tape Vol. 2, on Nature Sounds Records.

"There was no holding back with this album, I wanted to get the beats out no matter what. I wanted to give my fans a fresh body of music" Explains DJ Babu. "My mission with these instrumentals are to put some doubters to rest." For having 10+ years of production experience under his belt, most people know Babu as the World Renown / Champion DJ. "I want people to know my sound, all my beats come from a DJ mentality, so The Beat Tape Vol. 2 is a great outlet for me to showcase my production"

A West Coast veteran in his own right, Babu has achieved a sound that can't be labeled by region or style. This album could be equally appreciated in the Bronx, Compton or anywhere in between. The Beat Tape Vol. 2 is a treat for all the true B-Boy's out there and a testament to the fact that hip-hop's golden era is alive and well and as Babu concludes the vine between the golden era and today is still deeply rooted "allot of the DJs that I looked up to became great producers, from Dr. Dre to DJ Premier to Pete Rock. In a lot of ways, I'm trying to carry that same torch, where hip-hop is still rooted within DJing and records."

Led by Planet Asia, The Gold Chain Military is a bi-coastal group of verbal assassins, consisting of: Planet Asia, Killa Kali, and Turbin (All hailing from Fresno, CA), Killer Ben and Sav Killz (Repping Brooklyn, NY) and Tristate (From Los Angeles, CA), each of whom compliment each others individual styles. With Planet Asia at the steering wheel, the GCM (Gold Chain Military) is bringing lyricism and style back to independent hip-hop with the new album "Chain of Command" that plans to rival any current Hip Hop super groups. Recruited by the "General" Planet Asia himself, Gold Chain Military plans to fire at will towards the powers that are currently responsible for the lack of substance in today's Hip Hop.
