NEWS:Pharoahe Monch Signs To Duck Down Records, "W.A.R." Coming

Friday,March 19, Duck Down Records was unveil their annual showcase at Austin, Texas' South By Southwest. While the bill features various Duck Down acts ranging from the Boot Camp Clik to B-Real to Skyzoo, also included are Bahamadia and Pharoahe Monch. This morning it was confirmed that Monch is officially part of Dru Ha and Buckshot's label.

"I'm incredibly excited about my upcoming release
W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) and my new partnership between my company W.A.R. Media, LLC, and Duck Down Music. This album deals with conflicts and resolutions of the spirit, the soul, the government, and the industry among other things. Thus far it features Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid, Jean Grae, Styles P, Phonte, Black Thought, with more to come. It also features production from M-Phazes, Marco Polo, Mike Low, Fatin, Lee Stone, Exile and others to be announced. I am working diligently to finish the work for a summer release and I am honored to join forces with the Duck Down family during their 15 year anniversary," Monch said in a statement.

The Queens emcee entered the Hip Hop scene in the late '80s and released three albums with Prince Po in the group Organized Konfusion, along with a recent
Greatest Hits compilation. Monch would later release his acclaimed solo album, Internal Affairs with Rawkus Records at the top of this last decade. Backed by massive single "Simon Says," Monch elevated the profile of the Manhattan label that included Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Company Flow and Kool G Rap on their roster. The victory was bittersweet however, as a Godzilla movie sample halted the album and song, also forfeiting many of the emcee's monetary profits from the success.

In 2007, the emcee's sophomore album
Desire was released on Steve Rifkind's SRC Records. Despite critical praise, the major label debut translated into mediocre sales, ultimately making Monch leave the label that boasts Akon, Wu-Tang Clan and Asher Roth as artists.

Jun Seba aka Nujabes died today R.I.P.

Photobucket

Today, I have very somber news for the international hip hop community, especially fans of the independent hip hop scene, and those who have followed my career.

It has been announced that Jun Seba, aka Nujabes, Japanese hip hop producer extraordinaire, passed away late February. Official statement from the label (in Japanese) here:
http://hydeout.net/hydeout/2010/03/_hydeoutproductions.html

We deeply regret the loss of a unique talent and a close friend. Through his soulful music, Nujabes has touched so many people around the world, even beyond his dreams. He was a mysterious character to most as he avoided the public limelight, rarely conducted interviews, so only a few got to know the man behind the signature production. Yet it continued to amaze me how young listeners of all backgrounds learned of his enigmatic name, and expressed support for his music.

As I write now from Japan, I had been leaving him messages the past couple of weeks, trying to get in the studio together, so the news could not have come any more unexpected. Even last week, I passed by his house and called him thinking he was still home.

I met Nujabes around 2000 and as an upcoming MC, I was fortunate to work on tracks such as Battlecry, F.I.L.O, Luv(sic) parts 1, 2 and 3. We had been working on the next trilogy of Luv(sic) over the past year (which we're determined to see through). The last time we talked in January, Nujabes emailed me to wish Jeff Resurreccion, a 19-year old beatboxer who had just passed way from cancer, his heartfelt condolences.

While we continue to respect the privacy of his family, we will work to preserve his legacy, and pay tribute to the body of work, some unreleased, that he has left for us to enjoy. Jun Seba will be dearly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and fans worldwide.
in peace,
Shing02

BIOS:
Jun Seba (せば じゅん, Seba Jun?) (1974-February 26, 2010) was a Japanese hip-hop producer and DJ who recorded under the name Nujabes. The alias is his name spelled backwards. Alongside making music, Nujabes was also owner of the Shibuya record stores, T Records and Guinness Records and founder of the independent label Hydeout Productions.

After Tsutchie, Nujabes was the second artist Shinichirō Watanabe chose to contribute to the background music and soundtracks of Samurai Champloo, an anime which blends a feudal Japan setting with modern anachronisms, especially in regards to hip hop culture.[1] In addition to Japanese artists like Uyama Hiroto, Shing02 and Minmi, Nujabes has collaborated with underground American hip-hop acts CYNE, Cise Starr (as a solo apart from the hiphop collective CYNE), Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, CL Smooth, Terry Callier, as well as British rapper Funky DL and R&B singer Dwele. He was also a member of the production duo Urbanforest, an experimental collaboration with Nao T.[citation needed]

In late February, Jun Seba was involved in a car accident (the same day Japan experienced a 7.3 earthquake). He was 36 years old. His family had a private burial in Shimeyaka. Hydeout Productions has stated that although Nujabes has passed away, he left music behind to continue his legacy and it will be released in the near future

NEWS:40 Glocc Lands Major Distribution Deal For Zoo Life Ent.

Photobucket

After years of releasing mixtapes and developing a strong presence on the Internet, rapper 40 Glocc has landed a distribution deal with Fontana, the independent distribution arm for the Universal Music Group.

The West Coast rapper’s Zoo Life Entertainment will be distributed exclusively by Fontana. Artists currently on the roster include Gail Gotti, Village Boo, Lil Boo, Locie Locc and TipToe.

"I'm happy to be in business with Fontana and staff and glad my business hand and grind was respected enough to bring my Zoo Life label and brand amongst the world and cater to the fans independently," 40 Glocc told AllHipHop.com in a statement. "Fontana is the way to go for me and the vision I have for my company…”

The debut release under 40 Glocc’s new union with Fontana is titled N.W.A. (New World Agenda).

“Everyone at Fontana is looking forward to working with someone so incredibly focused on his music and winning as 40 Glocc,” stated Fontana President, Ron Spaulding. “He is not only one of the most acclaimed West Coast Hip-Hop artists, but he’s also a true innovator whose label has come far in a relatively short period of time. Through our new collaboration, we will work with 40 Glocc to expand the playing field for Zoo Life across all mediums and platforms even further.”

Two new singles are also slated to hit the streets this month. “Damn” features Reality King and Ray J., while “Welcome to California” features a variety of remixes with major West Coast artists like Xzibit, MC Eiht, Kurupt, Mistah F.A.B., Yukmouth, Messy Marv,
E-40 and others.

NEWS:Gil Scott-Heron - 'I'm New Here' OUT NOW!!!

Photobucket

Gil Scott-Heron is one of the most influential and important singer/songwriters to have come out of America in the second half of the last century. Much can be said about why this Gil's lyrics are so original and powerful but ,it is important not to overlook his utterly singular voice which is so distinctive and rough and tender. It is a voice of experience.

And the way this voice of his floats over the shifting funk rhythms and the deep jazz, soul and blues melodies that he and his band create is nothing short of sublime. It's also what enables him to draw you in to the difficult issues he does not shy away from dealing with. His sound is intimate and warm and direct and consequently it is hard to resist being moved and inspired by his message. And he has been consistently relevant whether it be on a personal or political can vas.

Early on in his career he wrote and recorded the song that for many is regarded as one of the first great rap tracks - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. From its open ing lines which turn Timothy Leary on his addled head ("You will not be able to stay home brother. You will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out. You will not be able to lose yourself on scag brother, because the revolution will not be televised."), Gil threw down the gauntlet to we the people, challenging us to get involved, be informed, retain a sense of humour and do the right thing. He was angry, politically savvy, compassionate and very funny.

When he was brought to Arista by Clive Davis in 1975, he was billed by the label as the black Bob Dylan, and whilst this reductive and over simplistic description is typical marketing bullshit, there is some raison d'etre for this moniker. For Gil is a protest poet of enormous subtlety who has railed against those things in the world that he believes are wrong. And like Dylan he has often used humour as a powerful weapon.

A new record from Gil Scott-Heron, forty years after his first solo album, is a cause for major celebration and something that the world needs now more than ever.

NEWS:Gonjasufi - 'A Sufi And A Killer' OUT NOW!!

Photobucket

In these recent heady days, hype spreads like digital swine-flu and new artists are subjected to the sea change of an entire career before ever developing their sound. So to exist outside of the spotlight and develop a sound at once ready for the masses online, yet rooted in the fierce individualism of artists past may seem somewhat of a quaint notion - until you hear Gonjasufi.

If only were amere marketing tool here, there would be more to tell abot the man himself. Hearing his singular register, chanting lyrics that oscillate between emotions laid bare and cryptiv philosophizing, locks just as many doors as it opens.

At the moment, he stands just outside the spotlight cast on his friends and collaborators Flying Lotus and The Gaslamp Killer, but the sonic brotherhood that exists is implicit rather than as similarities in sound. Drawing from unearthed strains of global psychedelia and merging it with a rejuvenated sense of hip-hop clarity currently distinct to the West Coast, Gonjasufi is more than just a songwriter, MC or performer.

His debut album "A Sufi And A Killer" recalls moments in love as well as trading sinister threats with enemies, sometimes within the same song. Trading in both the murk of lo-fidelity vintage samples and the concentrated crispness of current West Coast production, "A Sufi And A Killer" is both a roadmap to the riches of the distant past and a signpost to the future.
